Some sessions are lively and music-making; others are calm, reflective, and grounding. You never have to perform — your therapist guides the experience and meets you exactly where you are that day.

Not at all. You don’t need any musical background to participate in music therapy. Your therapist will guide you through the process, and every activity is adjusted to your comfort level — whether that means listening, humming, writing lyrics, playing simple rhythms, or exploring instruments together. If you do have musical experience, that can be incorporated too. Music therapy meets you exactly where you are, musically and emotionally.

Your first session is all about comfort and connection. We’ll spend time talking about your goals, interests, and what brought you to music therapy. You’ll have the chance to explore a few gentle music experiences at your own pace — no pressure, no performance. By the end of the session, we’ll create a collaborative plan that reflects your needs and intentions.

Yes. We offer secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth sessions for clients across the United States. Virtual music therapy can include songwriting, lyric discussion, guided relaxation, vocal work, and instrument play using items you already have at home. Telehealth is a great option for clients seeking flexibility, accessibility, or continuity while traveling.

At this time, Rhythm & Renewal operates as a private-pay practice. Some clients may be able to use HSA/FSA funds, and we can provide superbills for potential out-of-network reimbursement if your insurance allows it.

Yes — individuals enrolled in New Jersey’s Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) may be able to use Goods & Services funding to pay for music therapy. We can guide you through the steps and help you connect with your support coordinator.

Possibly, depending on eligibility and approval. Families using the Katie Beckett waiver may be able to access funding that can help support music therapy services. We’re happy to discuss the process and help you explore your options.

Music lessons focus on learning an instrument or building musical skills. Music therapy uses music as a clinical tool to support emotional, cognitive, social, and physical goals. While sessions may include instruments or singing, the goal is therapeutic growth — not performance. Anyone can participate, regardless of musical background.

Yes. We offer groups such as creative arts wellness groups, neurodiversity-affirming groups, and specialized programs (like musical theatre for individuals with disabilities). Groups may be offered seasonally or by request. Learn more about Group Therapy here.

We ask for 24 hours’ notice for cancellations whenever possible. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice may be subject to the full session fee.
